By December 2007, over 363,399 SHS had been implemented across the country, not only addressing the fundamental lighting needs of rural households but also contributing to greenhouse gas emissions reduction by displacing the use of kerosene. This study aims to estimate the CO2 mitigation potential of SHS in India by assessing their diffusion possibilities and establishing an appropriate baseline. Additionally, it explores the potential for carbon finance to reduce the economic burden on SHS users, revealing that under optimal conditions, a 19% reduction in the effective cost to the user is possible with a carbon price of $10/tCO2 and no transaction costs involved. These findings underscore the dual impact of SHS—improving livelihoods and fostering environmental sustainability—highlighting the crucial role of government initiatives and financial mechanisms in driving their widespread adoption.

Analyzing the Dynamics of Solar Home Systems (SHS): Mitigation Potential, Diffusion, and Financial Implications

CO2 Mitigation Potential of SHS: Various studies have explored the carbon mitigation potential of renewable energy technologies, with a particular focus on solar photovoltaic (PV) technology. This literature addresses two key aspects: the economic competitiveness of PV, considering energy payback time (EPBT) and life cycle analysis (LCA), and the barriers in project development, including additionality issues.

Cost Reduction Due to Carbon Finance: A study from 2001 projected that SHS projects, if granted a carbon price of US$30/tCO2, could achieve a substantial cost reduction of up to US$1.50/Wp. This reduction is associated with SHS displacing the use of 0.5 liters of kerosene per day for lighting. Carbon credit price predictions ranging from US$10–30 were based on analytical models, analyses, and encompassed all transaction costs (Lee et al., 2001). The study emphasizes three critical components influencing the cost reduction of SHS due to carbon.

Status of Diffusion of SHS in India: Initiated in 1985 under the Rural Renewable Energy Systems (RRES) program, the utilization of SHS (formerly Domestic Lighting Systems—DLS) gained momentum. Prior to this, limited experience existed, with a focus on design, demonstration, and field-testing under the National Solar Photovoltaic Energy Demonstration (NASPED) Programme (1980–85). By 1987, about 500 systems were deployed in the field.

Estimation of SHS Diffusion Potential: The 2001 Census of India revealed that 78 million out of 138 million rural households lacked grid electricity access. This significant gap is attributed to factors such as absent or damaged grid infrastructure in un-electrified or de-electrified villages. Even in grid-connected villages, a substantial number of households had not availed electricity.

Time Frame for Realizing SHS Diffusion Potential: The reported level of SHS diffusion in India stands at approximately 363,399, cumulatively achieved over the past two decades. Empirical studies suggest that the growth of technology often follows an S-shaped curve, combining simple and modified exponential curves. This growth pattern is characterized by initial slow growth, rapid acceleration after a certain takeoff point, followed by a gradual approach towards a finite level.

Impact of Carbon Finance on Effective Cost of SHS: This study assesses the impact of carbon finance on the effective cost of SHS under two scenarios.
